History of the Department:
The department was started in June 1952 with affiliation from the then University of Bombay. B. G. General Degree for Geography and B. Sc. Geography as a subsidiary subject (with 20 students) were the courses taught.
Principal C. B. Joshi was the pioneer who laid the foundation of this department in this university. He was Principal and Professor of Geography and Economics from 1952 and worked in this college for a period of three years.
The pay scale in those times was as follows: Rs. 300-15-450 for Professors Rs. 200-15-350 for Lecturers Rs. 150 for Demonstrators
Prof. B. Arunachalam was appointed as a lecturer in 1954. In the year 1956, Modern Education Society had applied for an extension of affiliation for teaching Geography as a principal subject for B.Sc. and for a post of one lecturer in Geography and a part time demonstrator which was to be started in June 1956. In that year 10 students opted for Geography as a Principal subject and 20 students opted for Geography as a subsidiary subject.
Prof. L. S. Bhat was appointed as a lecturer in June 1956 and Mr. P. K. Bengeri was appointed as a part-time demonstrator.
Current Status of the Department: Dr. Deepali Bhide was appointed as a lecturer in November, 2004 and is currently permanent faculty of the department. The second post in the department is an Ad-hoc post. Following subjects are taught by the faculty:
