The Department of Political Science was established in the year 1952. It offers double majors at the Graduation level.
The Department offers the students opportunities to develop their analytical skills necessary to understand contemporary social and political issues with special emphasis on contemporary challenges facing society in India and beyond with greater sensitivity.
The curriculum covers the core areas of Political Science (Political Theory, International Relations, Public Administration, the Constitutional Framework and Indian politics) and develops in depth understanding about various issues and questions of social and political human behavior.
The Department prepares students for diverse career options- post graduation, research think tanks, law, journalism, media and the like.
The alumni of the department occupy prestigious and responsible positions in several walks of life all over the country and abroad. Graduates from the department go on to occupy positions in public, non-profit and private sectors, in professions ranging from policy development to governance, print and electronic media to academics and other successful careers.
The College Library provides access to students to a wide range of international and national journals, magazines, daily newspapers and books, growing digital media collections and other printed materials to support research and learning in Political Science. Additionally, a numbers of e-resources like J-STOR, Journal of Digital Information, Emerald, Springer Journals, Oxford University Press, Cambridge University Press, Encyclopedia Britannica are also available in the Library
Departmental Activities organized under ‘Polis’
The Department, believes not only in excellence in academic arena but also equal attention is provided to extracurricular activities. ‘Polis’ - the Department's academic interactive event which is designed with an objective to enhance and develop analytical , creative and public speaking skills of students.
Various activities are organized by the Department under the aegis of ‘Polis’ for the benefit of the students in the throughout the Academic year.
TYBA (Politics) students presented various class presentations and discussions on the topics in Paper V – International Relations. The details of class presentations are as follows
A Class Quiz on International Relations was organized on 18th July 2017 on the theme of ‘Know your World : An International Relations Perspective’.
The Political Science Students attended a lecture on Mahatma Gandhiji. The event was organised by the NGO Abhinav Bharat at Taj Mahal Hotel, Mumbai on 2nd October 2017. Students from FY,SY and TYBA (Political Science) along with the Principal Dr. Tushar Desai , Vice Principal Dr Neeta Tatke , Vice Principal Dr. Dilip Maske and the Department faculty Dr.Prachee Phadke , Prof. Ms. Gayatri Gadgil ( Head, English Department) and Prof. Mandar Bhave (Head, IT Department) attended the event.
Department of Political Science in association with the Placement Cell and Department of Geography –MES D.G.Ruparel College of Arts Science and Commerce had organised a Career Guidance and Counselling Programme which was held online on 30th March, 2021, by University of Mumbai’s- Garware Institute of Career Education & Development (UM-GICED) in association with American India Foundation (AIF) and DELL Technologies.
The Department of Political Science and Praja Foundation ( Mumbai based non-governmental organization working towards enabling accountable governance by conducting data driven research on civic issues and inform citizens, media, and government administration) organized online workshop on Praja's Elected Representatives Fellowship Programme Cohort – 4 (Mumbai) on 10 February 2022 to introduce students about the various nuances of urban governance and the Elected Represented Fellowship Programme of Praja Foundation. The workshop was conducted by Mr. Eknath Pawar Data Manager, Praja Foundation through the Google Meet platform.
