About us.. The D. G. Ruparel College is a premier educational institution, established in 1952, and the Department of Botany has been there since inception. The first head of the department was Dr. P. S. Gharse who was the eminent mycologist and plant pathologist working in wheat rust research centre, Mahableshwar, before accepting this post. He started the subject Mycology and Plant Pathology at post graduate level and since then several students have passed and are holding posts of higher ranks at various industries and organizations in India and abroad.
The use of conventional and computer aided pedagogical methods by our teachers in order to make learning easy and effective, is a common practice. Research is an integral part in the department of Botany. Teachers, undergraduate and post graduate students actively participate in various research activities and also publish their research work in national and international journals. The faculty members regularly organize and attend workshops, conferences and seminars. The department also facilitates the Invited talks, competitions, career guidance, training and workshops for the betterment of the students.
Department has a good collection of plant fossils, permanent slides and preserved specimens. The department also provides the facility of departmental library to enable students has easy access to the study material.
The subject of Botany is not restricted to the classroom learning. Hence, to expose and familiarize students with the natural flora and ecology several excursions are organized by the department regularly. In addition, visits to Research Institutes, Organizations are also facilitated to bridge the gap between academics and market requirement.

Infrastructure

The department of Botany has been recognized as a research centre in Botany under the University of Mumbai. Department of botany has a good infrastructure with well-equipped laboratories and advanced instruments.

  • Total built up area: 401.56 sq.m
  • No. of laboratories: 02 (1 UG + 1 PG)
  • No. of classrooms: 02
  • A good collection of preserved plant specimens (wet and dry).
  • Four computers, one with internet facility and printer.
  • Instruments and equipments: UV-Visible spectrophotometer, Colorimeters,
  • Centrifuge, Digital Balance, Shaker, Incubators, Hot air oven, Laminar air flow, pH meter, microwave, Refrigerator, water bath, gel electrophoresis units, clevenger apparatus, Soxhlet apparatus, rotary vacuum evaporator, magnetic stirrer, stereo microscope, trinocular microscope with halogen light and USB digital Camera, Flame photometer and so on.
  • Departmental library with reference books.

  3. A backdrop has been to spread awareness about importance of mangroves in biodiversity conservation has been displayed at wetland conference.
  4. A display model of Wood Wide Web at National flower and fruit by National society of Friends of the Trees (FOT).
Project:
Undertook the project in association with IT and CS department to develop the QR code for major trees of Ruparel college.
